FAQ

General

So, what is a Traineeship?

A Traineeship means that you can combine work and structured training whilst being paid. A Trainee gains work experience and has the opportunity to learn new skills in a hands-on environment. During the traineeship there is a number of units of competency that must be completed to achieve a nationally recognised qualification. Traineeships have been developed by Industry for Industry. It combines time at work and flexible training with experience that could be a stepping stone to further education and training. A great way to get a head start in a career.

Who can do a Traineeship?

Trainees can be aged from 14 years 9 months to 65 years and must work a minimum average of 15 hours per week.

New employees (known as New Entrant Trainees) are those who have worked with the organisation or business for 3 months or less, full time, or one year or less, part time and are eligible to undertake traineeships.

Where employees fail to meet the eligibility requirements for a New Entrant Traineeship, they may be able to undertake training as an Existing Worker.

Existing Worker traineeships are similar to New Entrant Traineeships as they contain formal accredited training and workplace assessment. However, they are limited to Certificate III and Certificate IV level Traineeships with a two-year nominal term of training.

Questions From Employers

How can Access Group Training benefit my business?

Through flexible, workplace based training, we can work with your organisation to implement training programs to improve the skills of your staff.

But why?

  • Staff who have received formal training foster loyalty to employers. They feel more committed to a boss who invested in their training and development
  • Better trained, more versatile and multi-skilled staff
  • Increased productivity
  • Training and Development is an investment in retaining staff
  • Staff gain formal qualifications recognising their knowledge and skills
  • Training is on-the-job. No down time with employees going offsite
  • Financial incentives from the Federal Government
  • Industry support

What is the cost?

State Training Authorities have imposed a compulsory enrolment fee for traineeships. Access Group Training is required to charge the same fee as state run organisations such as TAFE or CIT. This fee is payable before training is commenced. There are a number of exemptions from this enrolment fee , please ask our consultant for more information.

If your employee is 'new' to your business (has not been working with you for three months or less full time or one year or less part time) then they should be eligible to undertake a traineeship where Federal Government Incentives are paid directly to you the employer.

How do I find out if my business can access the Government incentive for training?

Access Group Training has extensive experience and knowledge of Government incentives and has established relationships with many Australian Apprenticeship Centres. View the Incentive Summary page or visit the Australian Apprenticeships page. Incentives are available to eligible New Entrant and to some Existing Worker Traineeships.

What if I decide to sell my business. What happens to the traineeship then?

The Traineeship can be transferred to the new business owner. Easy as that.

What's the point of doing Existing Worker Traineeships?

Existing Worker Traineeships are aimed at providing existing employees with the opportunity of gaining formal qualifications to recognise their current level of knowledge and to assist in the development of new skills. As the employer you could receive Federal Government Incentives, but Access Group Training invoice the employer the cost for Training services, materials and assessment costs (the incentive payments are greater than our costs).
Please ask our consultant for more information.

Questions from Trainees

How long does a course take to compete?

Most new entrant traineeships are 12 months in length if you are employed fulltime.

For part-time employees, the time is extended. Our consultant or the Australian Apprenticeship Centre will advise.

But I'm not a new entrant, I've been working in my current position for a couple of years, can I do a traineeship?

Yes, you would be classed as an Existing Worker and most of these traineeships are over a two year period.

What if I already know what is in the course?

Access Group Training Consultants and the Australian Apprenticeship Centre will conduct an assessment of your current competency level, knowledge and skills. If you are assessed as competent in certain units then Recognition of Prior Learning would be applied.

How am I assessed?

Our assessment methods include being observed demonstrating the required skills and knowledge, providing work samples, discussions and progressively completing elements within our supplied Learning and Assessment Manuals.

What if I need help with my reading and writing?

Under Flexible learning, a number of units can be adapted to include verbal assessments. Generally language, literacy, numeracy needs or any other special needs would have been identified prior to the induction of the trainee. The most important thing is to make sure that you can cope with the course. Discuss the options with your Australian Apprenticeship Consultant.

Do I have to sit a test?

Under flexible learning there is no formal sit down examination. In some traineeships the Learning & Assessment Materials will have a sample project that may need to be completed. Again, this is not a sit down examination, the project/material forms part of the evidence to validate the competency that participants have the knowledge required for that unit.

What are the benefits if I complete a course?

Upon successful completion of your traineeship you will receive a certificate that states the level of competency that you have achieved. Our certificate is nationally recognised and the qualification validates your knowledge and underpinning skills that is recognised by employers throughout Australia.

What happens if I leave the business where Im doing my traineeship?

If you decide to move-on from where you started your traineeship, and your new employer wishes you to continue, then it's a simple matter of transferring the traineeship across to the new employer. However, the traineeship must be relevant to that business. Ie: Retail traineeship to retail, hospitality to hospitality, etc
